| A designated national treasure, is a special treat waiting for you to explore. The scenic byway is a 236-mile highway loop that runs through Durango, Silverton, Ouray, Telluride and points in between. It's a perfect one-day trip from the Strater, taking you along river valleys, over spectacular mountain passes and around towering snow capped peaks. Great all year long, it is particularly scenic during fall Colorfest, when the foliage is ablaze with color. Many people start the Skyway excursion from Durango and head North to Silverton. However, we suggest that you avoid the heavier traffic by heading west first and have your lunch break in either Rico or Telluride. Since most of the traffic goes the other way, you will have fewer interruptions. After Telluride, you may want to stay for one or two hours and swim at the public hot springs in Ouray. It is a relaxing way to break up the day and stretch your legs. From Ouray, there is about a 2 hour drive back to Durango plus you will want to leave some time in Silverton to see the museum, do some shopping and sightseeing and enjoy the town at a time when it isn't as busy as when the train is in town. All together the trip is a full day of fun and adventure. If you want to have a little more freedom, have the Strater Hotel pack a box lunch for your trip. You can picnic along the way at one of the many picturesque spots. To make your arrival back in Durango less hectic, call and make a reservation for dinner at the Mahogany Grille. You will avoid waiting in line and have a wonderful dinner to cap off your day.
